UNC impressive win in Belk Bowl….then the rumors start.

After a 1-5 start, North Carolina completed their season turnaround with an impressive 39-17 win in the Belk Bowl over Cincinnati. It was the Tar Heels first bowl win in Charlotte after three previous losses.

In the third quarter, freshman Ryan Switzer tied an NCAA record with his fifth punt return for a touchdown for the season. He set an UNC and ACC record with the touchdown.  He was named the MVP of the game.

Then after the game, ESPN’s Rodney Gilmore tweeted out this little nugget.

They have a history of grabbing football coaches from North Carolina. Stay tuned.

Monday Morning Fodder

Busy weekend in sports as we head towards Turkey Day and the final regular season weekend of college football.

North Carolina beat Old Dominion 80-20. Both head coaches agreed to shorten the fourth quarter to 10 minutes, a modern mercy rule. Some were calling Fedora classless, dont know why, they had scout team players in and took a knee on a fourth and goal. Cant just stop playing. ( btw, Florida State and South Carolina also won by 60 or more points)

Duke beat Wake Forest 28-21.  This sets up a big game vs North Carolina this weekend, they win and they will be in the ACC Championship Game vs Florida State.

Will Jameis Winston be able to play in the Championship Game, and a possible National Championship? We wont find out until after Thanksgiving.

East Carolina beat NC State in Raleigh 42-28.  State fans had to endure the “Our State” chants again, and a billboard on Capital Blvd.  Some statefans have called for that campaign to be retired.

Duke basketball escapes with a 91-90 win over Vermont. Coach K said they were “lucky to win”.

UNC basketball bounces back with two wins over the weekend, including a 93-84 win over defending champs and #3 ranked Louisville. Marcus Paige had a career high 32 points.

Carolina Panthers won their 7th game in a row, Manning cant beat Brady, Brian McCann to the Yankees, five years, $85 million.

Ice Up, Son!

Rut-Roh…. UNC Connection to Okie State Allegations?

Not one, but two current coaches on the UNC football team worked at Oklahoma State University during the time frame of the current allegations going around in an SI report.  I have not had time to even look into the Okie State issue yet, so I will refrain from acting like I know what I am talking about.  However, it should concern UNC fan that their head coach was an assistant from 2005 – 2007 at OSU.  Perhaps what should be more concerning is that current UNC wideout coach Gunter Brewer worked there from 2005 – 2010.

Before you fly off the handle, there are no accusations against Fedora or Brewer that we know of at this point.  We also do not know how true the allegations are to begin with.  It is never good, however, when your head coach has to address something like this.  Especially coming off the Heels of the Butch Davis era (see what I did there?)

Most likely there is nothing to see here, and we should all just move along.  Here at TSB we have zero reasons to believe that Fedora or Brewer are dirty, other than the fact that they work in college football which is covered in mud right now.

Coaching Carousel: Fedora one and done at UNC? UPDATE

So you thought college football coaching news in the triangle ended when NC State nabbed Dave Doeren in less than a week?… WRONG!!

With the coaching carousel in full spin mode right now rumors about job openings and who is going where are popping up daily. One interesting one this morning….

Tennessee interviewing UNC’s Larry Fedora about their head coaching job.  That is right , could Fedora leave town after one year at Chapel Hill and head to the almighty SEC?

Here is what is being said on Tarheelblog.com.  Is he really considering leaving or maybe using this as a way to get more money, kind of like Les Miles at LSU.  It was pointed out that Fedora could have taken an SEC job last year  at Texas A&M in his hometown, College Station, TX.  Or he could bethinking of leaving because of more possible punishment for UNC football. When is the Martin Report coming out anyway?

This also from Tarheelblog.com It should be pointed out that this is happening in New York where Fedora and Bubba Cunningham are both in town for the National Football Foundation awards banquet. This even draws coaches and AD from every school to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel where all sorts of networking and yes discussions about open job vacancies happen. If you recall, Cunningham did the bulk of his work during this event last year in hiring Fedora.

Right now it clearly in the yes he is/no he isnt interviewing phase.

Other coaching talk.

Apparently Auburn is going hard after Kirby Smart.  Now sounds like Gus Malzahn will be back at Auburn, this time as the head coach.

Mike (I’m a man, I’m 40) Gundy to Arkansas from Ok. State.   Bret Bielema heading to Arkansas from Wisconsin. Apparently this news stirred up a helping of possible #NCStateSheeeeeet with thoughts of Doeren backing out of his deal and heading back to Wisconsin.  I dont see that happening.

After Labor Day fodder: ACC Roundup, NFL starts tomorrow

Hope everyone enjoyed the Labor Day holiday. I didn’t make it to Dragon-Con but I did see some Wolfpack fans at Saturday’s Braves game and plenty of Tennessee fans. ..

Chick-Fil-A Kick Off Classic Games

Tennessee 35, NC State 21.  Game fell apart for NC State in about two minutes in the first quarter: Tennessee 72-yard TD pass, Glennon fumble in end zone for safety, Tennessee 67-yard TD run. The Vols had over 500 yards of total offense. Glennon was picked off three times.

Clemson 26, Auburn 19. The ACC got the Chick-Fil-A split with the Clemson win. Andre Ellington rushed for 231 yards, DeAndre Hopkins had 118 receiving yards and the go ahead touchdown.

20 year old Tennessee fan fell to his death during the Tennessee/NC State game, cheering after a touchdown.

Other ACC games…

UNC 62, Elon 0. Yes it was Elon. But impressive debut for Larry Fedora. UNC’s first shutout since 1999, and the Heels had their biggest scoring day in 17 years.

Virginia Tech 20, Georgia Tech 17 (OT). The Hokies got a 41 yard field goal as the clock ran out in regulation. Then their defense gets a turnover, and they get a game winning field goal in overtime. Interesting factoid: In the seven years the ACC has held a championship game, only the Hokies (five times) and Yellow Jackets have ever represented the Coastal Division. The victory, because of tiebreakers, essentially gives Virginia Tech a two-game lead over the Yellow Jackets.

Florida State wins 69-3, loses Senior defensive end Brandon Jenkins for the rest of the season. Duke 46, FIU 26. Miami 41, Boston College 32. Virginia 43, Richmond 19. Wake Forest 20, Liberty 17. In a shootout, Maryland 7, William & Mary 6.

Future ACC member Pittsburgh lost 31-17 to Youngstown State. It was Youngstown State’s first win over a BCS school in school history.

NFL Kicks off tomorrow night. Defending champion New York Giants vs Dallas.

Fedora Puts Staff In Place At UNC-CH

New University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill head football coach Larry Fedora announced eight members of his staff yesterday. Not only did he add to his staff, but the dominoes that fell from his acquisitions led to North Carolina State University losing a coach as well.  Hit the jump for details.
