Miller Says No to Maryland

Sean Miller Tells Kevin Anderson Where To Put Maryland's Coaching Gig

So much for all of the Sean Miller to Maryland talk.  Miller has already squashed that rumor, and has now signed an extension with Arizona.  Nice read from Andy Katz about Miller and what he is doing at Arizona.

Funny twist to this story is that Katz says that two “close confidants” of Miller’s told the four letter network that he was going to leave Arizona for Maryland.  Then Miller met with Anderson on Saturday, and those “close confidants” started changing their tunes.  Does this mean that he wanted the job, but Anderson turned him off to it?  I thought Anderson was such a great guy to work for, unlike his predecessor at Maryland?

In the end this is yet another credit to the great job that Sean Miller is doing.  Unfortunately for Arizona Fan, they are going to have to deal with this every time a major job opens up over the next few years.  Rest easy, Arizona Fan, Miller is not going anywhere and the fact that two ACC squads have now tried to steal him away only means that you have a great thing going.  It is much better than no one calling because your team stinks.

So who will be next to turn Kevin Anderson down?  Katz says Brad Stevens is up next on Anderson’s docket.  After getting a resounding no from Stevens, will he turn to Shaka Smart?  While it would certainly appeal to my dislike of Maryland to see them go through a long, painful search, it is not good for the ACC.  Go ahead and call Mike Brey already.

Rick Barnes Was in Raleigh This Past Weekend?

According to George Cox of Raycom Sports, Rick Barnes was home in North Carolina this past weekend.  His sources tell him that while Barnes was there, he swung over to Raleigh and met with one Deborah Yow.  This coincides with Yow being MIA at the Final Four in Houston, where everyone thought and expected she would be.  I wonder if they discussed NC State’s current job opening for a men’s basketball coach?

Then we have Greg Swaim saying this morning that it is looking more and more like Shaka Smart is going to be the next coach at NC State.

Interesting.  If Shaka Smart was indeed the number one target right now, one would think Yow would have been there to watch VCU play.  There were also reports that Yow asked for permission to interview Smart, but VCU brass has denied that anyone has asked for such a thing.

Another weekend of speculation goes by, and all we have is Yow being MIA in Houston and Barnes being in NC.  It should be noted, that if Yow and Barnes did indeed sit down, it would not mean that he was going to take the job, or even that Yow would offer it up.  It would be a pretty safe bet that we have all interviewed for jobs that we either did not accept or were not offered before, and this position is no different in those regards.

Either way, with Shaka Smart’s grandfather passing, we are not likely to hear anything in regards to him until Wednesday at the earliest.  Unless we hear that someone else, Barnes perhaps, is hired.  With the way the coaching carousel has turned so far this season, nothing would surprise me at this point.  Not even Sean Miller or Billy Donovan.

So is this more fun than tracking planes?  Oh, here is a last tidbit for you to chew on.  On Robert Montgomery Knight is reportedly interested in the UNLV job.

*I do not expect either Sean Miller or Billy Donovan to be the next coach at NC State.  I think those are pipe dreams, but I would remiss to rule anything out at this point.

Billy Donovan Rumors One Big Joke?

Well, apparently the “report” that he was in Raleigh last night from 97.9 in Tallahassee was/is.  Good one guys.  Very funny.  How bad is your radio show that you resort to pranks about where a coach is to generate calls?  What are you trying to be, a Morning Zoo show?

Anyway, today is the day of the “interview” from what we were told.  Keep in mind, that Donovan would not have to be in Raleigh for an interview to take place.  Skype is your friend, Ms. Yow.  Skype is your friend.

That said, I still don’t buy it.  No one in the national media does, that is for sure.  If nothing is announced by tomorrow, I’m convinced that Shaka Smart is the top target.  And by the way, he was a top target before this run by VCU.  While some might not think Smart would be a “knockout” hire, I actually do at this point.  He convinced me that he can coach his rear end off against Kansas, and I admire his passion.  He has recruiting experience, landing good players for the previously mentioned Donovan at Florida, as well as Oliver Purnell at Clemson.

Plus, he is only 33 years old, which means given the right situation, and success, he could be somewhere for 30 years or so.  If the success is not there, in five years you make a run at Sean Miller or maybe even Archie Miller after he shows what he can do at Dayton.

*It should be noted that Archie Miller is not the head coach at Dayton, nor have I heard anyone else say that he will be.

Tuesday Evening Update

Well, it is Tuesday night where I am (München, Deutchsland).  Anywho, we have “learned” a little bit today.

Josh Pastner was being courted by Missouri to take over their vacancy, but he has inked a five year extension with Memphis at $1.7Mil per.  Great move by Memphis, as Pastner is one of the rising stars of the coaching ranks.  Does this mean that the national media will start clowning MO for getting turned down?

The “knockout hire” that Tim Brando was speaking about was not Billy Donovan, as I speculated earlier.  Apparently if I listened to his radio show on XM I would have known it was Rick Barnes he was referring to.  So yes, Barnes is still in play, or was yesterday.

Speaking of Donovan, we heard a rumor he was to interview tomorrow in Raleigh.  There have been “reports” on Twitter of a “sighting” on campus today.  Right.  Sure thing, Tweeps, sure thing.  I mean, with as tight of a ship as Yow is running, I am sure that even if Donovan was on campus, no one would be able to recognize him.

So another day of rumors, another day of not really having much to go by.  Almost everyone seems to still be in play (except Sean Miller’s dad), and Rick Barnes and Billy Donovan seem to have some steam.  Or smoke, as in smoke screen.

Shaka Smart Up Next on Yow’s Docket?

WRAL in Raleigh stated that multiple sources have told it that VCU head coach Shaka Smart is on Yow’s list of potential hires.  They state that:

He was recently contacted by either the Parker search firm or by an NC State intermidiary to gauge his interest in coaching the Wolfpack.

Of course he was.  The 33 year old Smart is being contacted by pretty much every program with a vacancy in the big office.  We told you right here at TSB that he was on the list per David Glenn back on Wednesday, March 23rd.  I guess no new news is just how Debbie Yow wants it, and probably how it should be.

A lot of thoughts after the jump.  Too much to leave on the front page. Continue reading Shaka Smart Up Next on Yow’s Docket?

Sean Miller Will Not Interview for NC State Job

Per Sean Miller’s dad, John Miller, Sean Miller is staying put at Arizona.  The elder Miller indicated that Sean did have discussions about it, with his family I take it, but chose not to move his family yet again.  That would explain his comments about moving his family across country in the WRALSportsFan video the other day.

Most rational Wolfpack fans knew that Miller was a long shot.  A very, very long shot.  Like Barnes in 2006, however, the search had to start with Miller.  Now that he is officially out of the mix, expect things to heat up.  Unless, of course, Debbie Yow is still targeting coaches who are still coaching.

Arizona beats up Duke, does it hurt NCSU too?

Two thoughts as I was watching Arizona completely dismantle Duke last night.

1. Wow! Didn’t expect to see this happening.

2. What will this do to the “Sean Miller to NC State” talk.

BTW, heard a rumor that Yow has offered Sean Miller a contract for $3.2 million per year.

Arizona just played a great game last night.  Derrick Williams was unstoppable, he had 25 points in the first half.  Finished with a double-double.  They owned the boards, 40-27, and just won at every aspect of the game.  Final score 93-77

Kyrie Irving had 28 points in what might be his last game in a Duke uniform.  So did Irving coming back disrupt the chemistry?  Coach K, had to play Irving.  If Duke would have lost without Irving on the floor then we would be hearing, “Why did he not have Irving on the floor?”. It was a no-win situation.  Jay Bilas tweet….

Duke had to bring Kyrie Irving back. Couldn’t win the title without him. Played well, probably impacted Smith and Curry a bit. Worth risk.

As for Sean Miller.  I dont think he will be leaving Tuscon anytime soon. That is just my opinion.   He has Arizona on the brink of their first Final Four in a decade.  They have a great recruiting class coming in next year.  They showed Lute Olsen with a huge grin on his face last night…who knows. I know Statefan has visions of him court side at the RBC Center next year, especially after last night.  His stock is waaaay up! He is going to get paaaaid.

Sean Miller Will Take NC State Job?

According to Greg Swaim he will. Swaim has been stating this for a week now on Twitter, and when I directly asked him if he was giving his gut feeling or if he had tangible reasons to believe that Sean Miller would be the next coach at NC State he replied:

Numerous reliable national sources.

Of course, he soon followed with:

There’s no need for you Zona fans to hate.  I’ll be glad to share who your next coach will be if & when Miller leaves.

So why do we care what Swaim says?  For one, he is highly respected in the recruiting ranks, and is on the McDonald’s All-American selection team.  Second, he was the first to peg Mike Anderson as the next coach at Arkansas.  He is also predicting that Buzz Williams will be the next coach at Oklahoma.

In the WRALSportsFan video we posted yesterday, I did notice a smirk about to form on Miller’s face when asked about Raleigh.  Not saying it means anything, but it was there nonetheless.  Yeah, I’m that bad for a fix that I’m breaking down facial expressions.

In related news, Duke and Sean Miller’s Arizona Wildcats face off later tonight for the chance to go to the Elite Eight.  If my own gut is correct, we will have either a solid acceptance or removal of consideration from Miller by Tuesday.

Side note

How will it feel if the ACC has three teams in the Elite Eight?  It is very, very close to happening.
