Stuck at home because of the great southern snow storm of 2014 (yes, I went out and bought bread, only because we really were out of bread). A friend of mine alerted me to this incident from 2004. How did I miss this?? It isnt really sports related but it was a well done prank pulled off by some NC State students on the Wolf Web message board during a snowstorm, and a dumb move by News 14. So it is college related. Enjoy and stay warm.
On February 26, 2004, we had a snowstorm here in Raleigh, and all the news channels posted the businesses and schools that would be closed the next day. One of these fine news organizations, Time Warner Cable’s News 14 Carolina, chose the most convenient but least secure method to allow businesses to report closings: the Internet. Well, it wasn’t long before members of The Wolf Web, an NCSU message board, exposed this flaw. They went crazy, as you’re about to see. The best part of the whole thing was once a closing was accepted, it could be edited on the Internet and would go straight to TV without having to be reviewed again…
What happened to the lost colony of UNC walk-ons? One theory suggests that the walk-ons joined the seminal Seminole tribe and settled in Tallahassee. Others believe that they died from embarrassment during one of the worst defeats in UNC history. Some say that they tried to return to Chapel Hill and were lost in a sea of FSU fans. Perhaps they moved north to join the real Carolina in Columbia, SC or became ball boys responsible for supplying towels and water for Deivida Dulkys. One day someone may pick up the trail of the lost colony of UNC walk-ons and solve the mystery.
Mike Krzyzewski became Division one’s all-time winningest coach when Duke beat Michigan State 74-69 on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. But you already knew that. So for entertainment purposes I posted a slightly unedited text message conversation I had during the game with one of my best friends who happens to be a Tar Heel .
Something tells me that if this video was made on dook campus and starred Kyle Singler some of you would be less than impressed. Either way, that TYL has not only the moves but the looks to go far in life. That is if all you need to go far in life is the ability to juggle basketballs with your feet.
While perusing the interwebs this morning I ran across this little nugget about college rivalries. It has all of the tried, true, and tired rivalries that we know and love. Michigan-tOSU, dook-UNX, blah, blah, blah. Yeah, they’re rivalries, but we’ve heard about them enough (except for UNX-dook during bball season, we’ll never get enough of that one) and it got me to thinking about the other rivalries that we don’t celebrate as much. Hit the jump for ten of the more under-appreciated sporting rivalries
I know, I know. I have not posted in a bit now. As you can imagine, things are a bit tight right now with my time as we prepare to head back to PA. That said, why don’t we all take a break from the debacle on the Hill and relax a few. Or about 30. This is not sports related in the least. This is just flat out awesome related. Not safe for work, and you will want to watch all 30 minutes so make sure you have some time on your hands. Hey, it isn’t an hour long podcast…
