ESPN Power Rankings

Do you guys even care about ESPN and their rankings anymore?  For some reason, even though I dismiss them, I have to check out the weekly “power rankings” when they come out.  This week’s rankings are up, and the top five are UNC-CH, Duke, UVA, VaTech and NC State.  It will be interesting to see how these shake out through the next two months, and also how accurate our TSB picks turn out.

It should be noted that the ACC regular season does not start until this Saturday, the 7th.  Is it just me, or is it a late start this year?  Based on what you have seen so far, are you excited for the season or will it be more of the same?  Georgia Tech has been the bad surprise for me, with Wake Forest actually being on the positive end of that discussion.

Final Power Poll and ACC Awards

Where Is The Freaking ACC Power Poll?

My apologies. Life, job, the fact I have two blogs running at once. Gremlins sneaking into my house and smashing my laptop with a hammer. Depression induced by UNC’s awful season.

Take you pick.  All of those are fairly valid. Next week will do a end of the regular season power poll to close it out.

In the meantime, be sure to check out the NCAA’s new website containing online video of every NCAA Tournament game from the Sweet Sixteen to the title game during the past decade. It is presently the only way you can see Duke actually play a Final Four game.

Apologies for the missed week…I was  in South Korea but could not find anyone to tell me how to say “Duke Sucks” in Korean.

The big news in this week’s poll is unanimity.  Duke collected all the first place votes and NC State collected all the last place ones.  The rest of it is as muddled as you think it would be with the exception of Wake Forest and Virginia Tech creating some separation from the rest of the pack.

  • The weight of UNC’s turnovers reached a tipping point this week causing the Tar Heels to fall to fifth and forcing Roy Williams to use a timeout in the first half…early in the first half.  In the Georgia Tech game UNC went to halftime with only three timeouts left. Stock up on canned goods people.
  • Virginia’s 3-0 record was like helium and the Cavs rose to 3rd in the poll.  jhmd2000 is not yet a believer and will likely end up being right this time next week.
  • Duke is #1 unanimously for the first time since the poll’s inception.  Yes, smallandpettypat voted Duke #1 and slid UNC down which was probably a very painful experience for him.
  • Georgia Tech did a little validating this week with the win over UNC but for some reason the Jackets only work on weekends.

  • Georgia Tech takes the biggest jump moving from 8th to 3rd with the win over Duke.
  • If you are looking for clear divisions in the poll you have:

    The Good: UNC, Duke
The Could Be Good: Georgia Tech, Miami, FSU, Clemson and Virginia Tech
The Meh: Maryland and Wake Forest
The Bad: Virginia, Boston College and NC State

  • NC State completes their full descent to the bottom with the loss at home to Virginia.

  • After a week off the power poll returns with a significant bunching in the middle. Wake Forest, Clemson, Miami and Georgia Tech look pretty much the same on the court and within six points of each other in the poll.
  • Duke is the clear cut #1 getting all but one first place vote. UNC is 2nd with FSU and Virginia Tech tied at 3rd.  The Hokies got a huge win over the weekend against a good Seton Hall team. The Hokies are getting it done in the pre-conference season for a change which means we will likely be spared Seth Greenberg lobbying for an NCAA Tournament bid or expansion.
  • Boston College lost to Maine this past week to go along with their Harvard loss.  Why that doesn’t make them dead last with a bullet is anyone’s guess.
  • William & Mary made it 2-0 versus the ACC in beating Maryland. They probably should be ranked somewhere in this poll.
