Enforce Rule 10, Section 5

Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images

John W. Adams, the NCAA National Officials Coordinator recently sent out his monthly memo to officials.

In the memo he stated that he has observed that  ”officials are reluctant to enforce Rule 10, Section 5″, the section that deals with “Unsporting Technical Infractions committed by players, substitutes, and bench personnel, including head coaches.”

Basically…players taunting, using profanity and complaining about calls. Also, coaches out on the floor complaining about calls

Adams says these actions need to be called technical fouls more often and refs need to regain control of the games.  Probably doesn’t want another situation like Xavier and Cincinnati earlier this season where a full-out brawl took place.

So they are cracking down on taunting and bad sportsmanship, like this example in the Oklahoma State vs Missouri game. Then there are the coaches.

If a coach is out on the floor complaining about a call, it is not your job to walk him back.  It is your job as an official to assess a technical foul for violating the provisions of 10-5-2, a,b,c, e or f.  If a coach is gesturing and complaining across the floor at you to the point where he has ignored a warning to stop, DON’T go across the floor to have a “baseball umpire confrontation” with him, just asses him a Technical foul.

Coaches are out on the floor all the time. We know the reputations of some of the coaches around the ACC, especially by opposing fan bases. Fans hate the referees for the most part and do love to complain about them. Yes, some of it is warranted.

Roy Williams was called for technical foul by Jamie Luckie in the Georgia Tech game. Mark Gottfried was called for a technical by Roger Ayers also in a game against Georgia Tech earlier this season.

Just last night Maryland coach Mark Turgeon was ejected after getting two technicals by official Brian Dorsey after arguing a call in the second half against Miami.

Maybe Brian Dorsey got the memo.

When I go to a game, I’m there to see the officials in action. Isn’t everybody? Call Ts, call everything. Get all the coaches and players out of the damn game. Then we can sit back and watch the refs with no distractions.

“Roy Williams was called for technical foul by Jamie Luckie in the Georgia Tech game. Mark Gottfried was called for a technical by Roger Ayers also in a game against Georgia Tech earlier this season.”

Mike Krzyzewski was called for a technical in 1990.

For a man that rides the officials on every possession he sure doesn’t get a lot of technical fouls……..

if they actually enforced this rule, Gary Williams would have never finished a game…

    Nate,

You have absolutely ruined the perfectly good conspiracy theory that Roger Ayers hates Mark “Coed” Gottfried.

Dook got a “T” last night but it was Dawkins taunting a VT player.

    HP,

I was just about to mention that. Dawkins was doing the typical duke player overreacting after making a big play and got T’d up. Looks like the refs are going to be quick when calling technical fouls.
