ACC Announces Future Regular-Season Scheduling Formats

With Pittsburgh and Syracuse joining the ACC in 2013 2014 20??, fans have been waiting to hear the conference’s proposal on adjusting the scheduling formats to accommodate them especially in football and basketball.

Today, after the conclusion of the ACC winter meetings, they announced future regular-season scheduling formats.

Click the link and read for all the info, but highlights include:

In football

  • Current divisional alignments remain the same with Pitt going to the Coast and Cuse going to the Atlantic
  • Increase in the number of conference games per season from 8 to 9

In basketball

  • 18-game conference schedule beginning in 2012-13 (previously announced)
  • When Pitt and Syracuse join, each school will have one primary partner, instead of the two they have now

I’m not an old-school ACC fundamentalist, but even I think this change is too cumbersome and not necessarily in the best interest of the conference, but what can you do.  The ACC chose to go to 14 teams and these are the pains that come along with it.  The magic elixir that will make it all better is if the quality of play rises subsequent to or as a result of these changes.  I think all of us would like to see the ACC assert itself more in football and return to the envy of conferences nationwide in basketball.  If that happens, it will have all been worth it in the end.

the big thing is UNC and State only once a year in basketball.
    State’s partner is Wake Forest.

Not a good day for the ACC traditionalists.

    The headline should have been:

ACC Announces UNC / NC State No Longer A Basketball Rivalry

Uh, just saw Pat’s comment in the other thread. Not trying to steal your thunder dude.

State could have been the team who has won 11 straight in the series and they still would have done this.

More deference should be paid to the original members–the 4 NC schools and UMd, UVa, & Clemson. Don’t have to worry about Scarolina anymore. In basketball, the 4 NC schools should have home & home against each other every year. All 7 should play each other once in football every year. Haven’t figured out MD and UVA & Clemson in basketball yet. Any ideas?
    ACC should know this.

^ The hangman should be happy to be escaping his noose.

  • Let’s just be honest:

Rivalries, tradition, and all of that is great, but NCSU is better off not playing UNC twice every year.

from a football scheduling perspective, need to nail down ‘which year does this begin’….because the number of conference games goes up to nine, and each school loses an OOC slot.

Given how far in advance most non-conference series are scheduled, that means lots of quick phone calls cancelling that ‘fourth’ OOC game in ’14, ’15, ’16, etc…. (sorry, MAC…sorry FBS schools….sorry ECU…)
