ESPN: We Deeply Apologize

Dateline: Connecticut.  At a hastily called press conference, executives at ESPN apologized for failing to provide the appropriate warnings in advance of last night’s programming. Distraught and clearly uncomfortable, ESPN’s vice president of broadcasting, flanked by Dick Vitale, Mickey Mouse and Dumbo and each of their ominous faces, stated as follows:

“We understand and hear the chorus of outrage from parents around the country about last night’s programming. We understand that gratuitous beat-down featured graphic violence and clearly provoked adult language throughout living rooms throughout the viewing area. We promise to make systemic changes so that little children—our dearest viewers—aren’t exposed to such a televised atrocity again without adequate warnings to their parents. Henceforth and hereafter, all NCSU v. UNC basketball games will be rated PG-13. Once again, we can’t express our level of regret in words.”

“Gott got my respect with the brusque handshake…..didn’t give Roy time for one of his little condescending ear chats.”

“I didn’t watch one minute of this game tonight. Saw this coming so didn’t bother.”

“I actually thought we had a shot going into that game, but so did a bunch of Holes that I know think how sheepish they must feel right now…”

editor’s note: Really? Why? Because UNX won by 19? By far one of the stupidest things I’ve seen said yet

“Can we just forfeit these 2 games every year? It would save us a lot of trouble and time and keep our blood pressure down.”

I predict a very quiet day from NXSU fans here.

  • I was hoping that one of the Heels fans would put up an actual post breaking down the game, as I certainly refuse to do it. I guess that is too much to ask for, but hey, let’s get some more joke posts up! Those are always great!

    I hate you all.

  • avatar Todd

    Pat-

It may be quiet….I try not to run my mouth too much before or after any game regardless of the outcome.

Even so, I find your comment funny…coming from the guy who talked a lot of junk then disappeared for 2 weeks the last two Novembers. I know I know….NCSU fan is bringing up football on a basketball post (the inverse is true of UNC fan), but that’s not my point…my point is you like pointing fingers at others for doing the same things you do. I got much love for you, but even you have to see this…

  • avatar smallandpettypat

You do know where I was November before last right? They don’t exactly have internet access there. I most definitely did not disappear this past November. I took my lumps, I was here, there just wasn’t a whole lot that I could say. We got whomped.

“I was hoping that one of the Heels fans would put up an actual post breaking down the game”

UNX won by 19 even though they didn’t score for the last 5:01 of the game. There’s all of the expert analysis that you need.

  • avatar Heels Perspective

Zeller and Henson presented a different “animal” to Howell and Calvin. FSU on the other hand has the physicallity to deal with that type length and athletism. Vandenberg would have actually been a better option for the Pack.

    * Bullock’s D on Woods was key. Bullock was probably a better match for the Heels in this than Strickland, although there will be games where the Heels will miss Strickland if the opposing “2″ guard has any quickness at all.

    * State had nothing for Barnes.

    * Marshall did a good job on Brown, in fact 6 of Brown’s points came on banked in 3 pointers.

Nightmare for Gott in his initial effort to endure himself to Pack fans.

    *

  • avatar TheManKev

Man, UNC fans really are gracious in victory and act like they’ve been there before. They’re treating this game just like any other victory against a non-rival, bravo!

  • avatar Todd

    …and the November before that?

    All-

Henson was a beast…Leslie was trying to adjust his shots alter in the game because his normal stuff was getting blocked left and right. UNC’s front court shut down the offense with blocked shots which is an amazing feat and they shut NCSU down with the rebounds. That killed the Pack early and quick. Much props to that.

  • avatar smallandpettypat

@Todd, if you want to pretend I hide out after a loss, that’s cool. If you want to keep talking football during bball season, that’s cool too. My only response is scoreboard.

    @Kev/little d, okay.

  • HP, Vandenberg has either already received a medial redshirt or is going to. So he was not an option. It would be nice to have him in there against the Heels though, because his size would help counter Zeller and Henson. He would have gotten dominated too, though. State needs a big man in a bad way. Any team with two 7 footers will own them.

  • avatar Nate

    TMK,
How are UNC fans supposed to “act”. Ignore the game and not post anything? After hearing from statefan all week about what they were going to do.

I love how other fans want to tell UNC fans how they should act.

  • avatar smallandpettypat

I do give props to Champs and Todd for showing up, though.

  • avatar Todd

    I accept scoreboard…nothing I can say to that…but I”m not pretending…look at the archives

Don’t deflect…I told you the point of me mentioning football season was to show how you disappear…so don’t throw the whole football on a b-ball post thing out there and like I said the inverse is true when UNC fan mentions b-ball on a foohbaw post.

You do what you want to do just don’t rip others for doing the same thing.

Now I”m ready to take more lumps for my team not showing up last night…sigh

  • avatar Heels Perspective

^ Yes, Champs. I knew Vandenberg was out for medical reasons. I just mentioned him since he did give Zeller some trouble last year.

  • avatar TheManKev

I’m not telling anyone how to act. It’s just a bit ironic that the mantra leading up to the game was “not our rival”, then after the game it’s blasting State & their fans on the outcome of the game.

I blast UVA after Tech kills them in football, cause they’re a rival. I couldn’t care less after Tech kills UNC, cause they’re just another victim.

But you all can do whatever you like, it doesn’t matter to me. State fans should be mad at Tech for killing UNC for a half last week and waking up the beast. The Heels have been a completely different team since halftime of the Tech game.

  • avatar Craig Rowe

State got their asses handed to them. All that can be said. UNC played like the #1 team last night and there was not a rebound to be had anywhere for the guys in red. UNC’s team reminds me of UCONN’s 2006 team in that everyone is long and athletic and simply too much for most team’s to handle.

I was so tempted to run over to Red Rock at about 3:30 yesterday to put cash on the Holes to cover … Need to listen to that instinct next time.

Calvin Leslie, seriously, has to be one of the most overrated recruits in years. I have seen nothing from him other than being able to jump and be, unnecessarily, a match-up problem. He’s a turn-over machine, hates hanging on to the ball and boasts the maturity level of a 12-year-old. Closing down Wood was clearly a priority, but he could have gone 10-10 from beyond the arc and it wouldn’t have mattered.

Mike, you need to get over Vandy, too. Hurt or not, he’s just another un-athletic goon. He wouldn’t have made a spec of difference last night. He would have fouled out in five minutes trying to keep up with either of those lanky mokes AND been dunked on at least twice.

By the way, this post is pretty funny. Hats off, jmhd.

  • avatar Todd

Poll time…which is more demoralizing…a blocked shot…or getting dunked on?

I posit a blocked shot because getting dunked on involves the other guy getting good timing and position and you can’t really do anything to prevent it other than foul him….

    Discuss…

  • Carl, I don’t “need to get over Vandy”. The only thing he has that would have helped last night is height. The only way that helps is that maybe, just maybe Leslie doesn’t have either Henson or Zeller attached to his hip all night.

HP, I was not sure if you knew he was on the shelf or not. My bad.

  • avatar Nate

    TMK,
Everyone knows its a rivalry. In-state schools, in the same conference, same region. It has just been eclipsed by the UNC-Dook rivalry.

“Not our Rival” is said because it pisses the other team and their fans off. Poking their rival. Just like for a while when Duke was saying UNC wasnt their rival, Maryland was. You actually believe that? Pissing off their rival.

Funny, that even on the broadcast last night, Vitale said it wasnt a rivalry because its been so one sided. They’re becoming victims. (btw, Mike Patrick looked like a corpse)

So yes, UNC fans are going to blast State & their fans after another win. 11!!

  • avatar smallandpettypat

I think it depends on the kind of dunked on. There’s dunked on and then there’s posterized. I think for blocked shots to be truly demoralizing there has to be more than one. After the third one I think it really gets in the player’s head and takes them out of the game. But one or two, especially to a volume shooter, probably don’t rattle a good player too terribly.

  • avatar Nate

    good topic Todd,

I think it depends on the level of being dunked on or blocked.
“Danny Green on Paulus” level of dunked on is pretty bad, especially on your own court.

If someone blocks your shot into the crowd, that is demoralizing too. or knowing that you cant get the ball inside or it will get swatted away is rough.

    Not sure

  • ““Not our Rival” is said because it pisses the other team and their fans off.”

So you just want to piss off State Fan today? No worries, that game last night already accomplished that.

  • avatar Todd

    Pat-

Yes the Green on Paulus crime was bad…but what else could Paulus do? On a blocked shot, you’re trying to do something and its taken away.

    Nate-

Last night’s game was an extreme example of shot blocking controlling the game. It changed the entire dynamic under the hoop. State was bascially castrated offensively in the paint.

  • avatar oneal

I think the type of block depends as well. Was it someone coming from the weak side that the shooter couldn’t see, or was it posting somebody up, then facing them, then shooting, and getting swatted? I’d say the first is no big deal; the second much, much worse.

  • avatar tarheelmax

“Yes the Green on Paulus crime was bad…but what else could Paulus do?”

I would say that’s exactly why dunks like that can be so demoralizing. Knowing that someone is going to dunk all over you and you realizing that you can’t do anything about it. Thoughts of being less talented and less athletic than your opponent can easily start to creep into your mind.

Although, I probably side on the type of blocked shot oneal is talking about. If you are one-on-one with a guy, make a move, and get that ball smacked back at you, that’s pretty tough to overcome mentally.

  • avatar I-Like-Tacos

    ……my head hurts.

christ, UNX looked like they just wanted to come out and beat the shit out of State, and obviously they did. This game gave me the same feeling as the 41-11 halftime score game in ’08, just utter hoplessness. Even when State was down 17-14, it looked like we were playing in wet cement and knew it was only a matter of time when UNX would put us away…which didn’t take too long.

I’m so disappointed in Browns play most. He looks like he just checks out in such a lackadaisical manner sometimes. Leslie is just an idiot, and I can’t understand why Gott lets him play the way he does. Like I said before, ALL he is good for is rebounds and putbacks. NEVER let him dribble, EVER. NEVER let him make a pass longer than a 5 feet, EVER…and for christ’s sake, play Painter more! Wood was completely useless. Krishna forbid we run play to get him open, before we are losing by 15.

Every damn year it’s the same old shit. State shit. I am depressed and hung over. I didn’t expect to win, but for gad sakes let’s at least look organized for a 5 minute period and not embarrass ourselves toooo much on national tv. The recruiting motto we ran last night was “Come play at State and look like a complete retard”. Of course, we have been running with that motto for the past 21 years.

  • avatar smallandpettypat

Paulus could have gotten the hell out of the way. Maybe not been in the position to be forever remembered as “that kid with Danny Green’s nuts imprinted on his forehead”. I respect the fact that he stood in there to try for the charge. I wouldn’t have.

Somebody getting blocked while dunking looks like it would kind of throw your game off. That is the strongest scoring move someone can make, physically, on offense and for someone to take that away from you has to mess you up. I wouldn’t know, though. I can’t even come close to dunking.

  • avatar Craig Rowe

Getting dunked on is more demoralizing, in my opinion, simply because it’s become some sort of pop-culture aspect of hoops that goes beyond the game. Blocks are always a more strategic advantage because it’s good defense. UCONN scared the hell out of teams for years with shot blocking. It makes a huge difference.

  • avatar Nate

“So you just want to piss off State Fan today? No worries, that game last night already accomplished that.”

No, its used over and over again to piss you guys off. Rub salt in your 0-11 wound.

  • avatar Todd

I think the dunked-on thing has become pop-cultured becasue of the poterizing aspect, but…isn’t more manly to stand there and take../try to change it with a charge than to run away like a lil girl…just so you don’t end up on a poster?

  • avatar Durham

so which is considered the ‘worse’ beatdown – 74-55 in hoops or 13-0 in football?

  • avatar Craig Rowe

I kind of mean this as a threadjack, but am happy to keep on the current topic, but WTF is the Colts front office thinking?!

How To Alienate A Fanbase 101: Publicly call out the single most beloved figure in the history of your franchise and perhaps all of American sports.

    Lord what morons.

  • avatar smallandpettypat

Johnny Unitas is playing Gary Williams and sabotaging Peyton from behind the scenes.

  • avatar Heels Perspective

Hey Durham, man up like Paulus and pick a team, any team.

  • avatar UNC RAJ

What about missing a dunk? Is that more or less demoralizing then getting dunked on or getting your shot blocked?

  • avatar Todd

You mean Mayflower trucking isn’t the Colt’s most cherished player?

  • avatar TheManKev

so which is considered the ‘worse’ beatdown – 74-55 in hoops or 13-0 in football?

A top 40-60 team (out of ~120) losing 13-0 to another top 40-60 is a worse beatdown than a top 50-60 team (out of ~350) losing to a top 10 team 74-55, in my opinion. Which was the least expected result? That’s your worst beatdown, right there.

  • avatar smallandpettypat

What does football have to do with basketball? Which is the better streak, 5-0 since ’06 or 11-0 since ’06?

  • avatar Durham

they would be equivalent – in each case, the better team took advantage of all of its opportunities against the lesser team.

another threadjack — Greg Schiano? really, Tampa Bay??

  • avatar Todd

Yeh Raj…a missed dunk is pretty bad…

  • avatar I-Like-Tacos

“Which is the better streak, 5-0 since ’06 or 11-0 since ’06?”

Not to get too nit-picky but I think you mean “11-0 since ’06-07′”. As it was in January of 2007 when State last beat UNX in basketball.

  • The programing I saw last night was a remake. Only difference was UNC smacked Goldie Wilson back to 1955 where he works for Lou sweeping the floor at the ACC slop house.

Mr sandman, bring me a dream ( bum bum bum ) ….

  • avatar Nate

Considered by many of the best scripts ever written. And a damn near perfect movie.

“Mayyyyyor. Mayor Goldie Wilson, I like the sound of that …”

“A colored mayor, that’ll be the day.”

Has anybody ever seen two teams tied for the same spot? UNX and Baylor tied at #6 has to be a typo, right?
