John Blake Casts a Very Large Shadow

Thanks guys.  I really, really appreciate getting the heads up that John Blake is, um, back in the news.  Being located where I am, I do not get ACC news unless I seek it out.  Which brings me to this post… hit the jump for more John Blake goodness.

We all know that Gary Wichard and John Blake are good friends.  So much so that Blake is a Godfather to one of Wichard’s kids.  So forgive me if I do not go ape shit over the news that they spoke on the phone.  A lot.  The problem with the phone calls and text messages is not that there were 152 connections in a mere 235 days, but rather the lengths of these calls.  Now, I’m not exactly Nino Brown, but tell me this log does not read like something Pookie and his dealer may have constructed.  That is 201 minutes (although one call did not have a time listed) over 61 calls.  An average of about 3 minutes per call, that was swung upwards by four calls totaling 64 minutes.  The context of these calls is certainly under scrutiny, and it could all come out clean in the wash.

Or, it could get very, very dirty.  Keep in mind that Wichard lied about his relationship with Blake once already.  Now add in the news that Blake omitted any jobs from his resume that were agent related.  Yes, he lied on his resume.  The same resume that he submitted to UNC-CH when he applied for the job that Butch Davis had already offered him.  So did Butch even bother to look at his resume?  Is it Butch’s job to review said resume, or is that farmed out to HR?  We still do not know why Wichard lied about Blake’s past, but one has to now wonder if these phone calls factor in and how.

So where does this leave us?  Still stuck on stupid, if you ask me, which you didn’t, but I did, so I answered.  Either way, looks like I’m still wearing my ABCer hat since I’m reporting, like, the news and stuff, and not doing so with my fuzzy, wuzzy rainbow pen.

Another crazy ABC post, from one crazy ABCer.

The bigger question is are Blake and Wichard romantically involved? And those three players that Blake coached that signed with Wichard over SIX or SEVEN years? …. my, my, that Blake is raking in the cash for Wichard.

  • Wilf, that just makes it even stranger if you ask me, and makes me wonder if Wichard or Blake are serving as a bookie of some sort. Or maybe they are romantically involved, as you intimated.

But you keep thinking that nothing dirty is going on. Just make sure you keep your eyes shut while your head is buried in the sand. I’d hate for you to lacerate your cornea.

  • Wilf,

Let’s say it is “only” three players (I’m not sure that’s accurate, by the way).

Balmer signed a 5 year, 11.5 million dollar contract. 3 percent of that would be $240,000.

I saw a 2011 mock draft with Quinn at 3, Austin at 29, and Bruce Carter at 31.

This year, those three spots got $55 million, $9.8 million, and $9,7 million. That’s $74.5 million total. The agent’s 3 percent of that? $2.235 million.

Do you really think that isn’t at least a little bit of incentive to bend a few rules?

“Do you really think that isn’t at least a little bit of incentive to bend a few rules?”

    ABSOLUTELY YES!

I’m just saying there are so many different ways to play this, and all we are seeing is speculation.

Personally I’m embarrassed by all this but I’m waiting for the facts before I react to much.

    BTW, nothing wrong with speculating….
