Monday Morning Fodder

As we awake from our slumber that was this past weekend, the question posed is did anything of interest happen?  You betcha!!  Tiger Woods, State, Duke and even UNC are on this weeks list of topics.
We’ll start with Tiger, who made his public apology on Friday.  Everyone seems to be up in arms over dude’s “presser”, but people need to relax a little bit.  Tiger did not have to get in front of the world and give that apology, nor did the world have to stop to watch it.  I admitedly have not caught the entire speech myself, and I have no plans on doing so.  Tiger owed none of us anything.  That is how I see it now, and probably how I will continue to see it in the future.  Dude messed up in his own private life, and that is the only part of his life that he needs to work on.  Both my wife and I just want him back on the golf course so we can start watching again.

Oh, and the WGC was this weekend.  Tiger is accused of upstaging the event with the timing of his “presser”.  To that I say, pfft!.  I was not following the WGC before 11:01am on Friday, and I didn’t follow it at 11:15am on Friday.  I do not know who won, nor do I care.  If Tiger were there, I would feel differently.  Say what you will, but that is not just the case in my house, but I’m guessing that is the case in most homes.

On to actual sports that matter.  No, not the Winston Cup race yesterday, but I do know that JJ won as per usual.  No, we are talking about basketball of the college variety.  Things are heating up in the ACC, and with yesterdays win over VA Tech Duke has taken command of the regular season.  They are only one game up on Maryland, who received a gift in the form of a buzzer beater from Greivis Vasquez to beat GA Tech on Saturday, and is arguably playing some of the best ball in the country right now.

Travel down 15/501 for a few minutes and you will arrive in the bastion of stench beautiful Pine Trees that blanket Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina there.  Just when it looked like things could not get worse for Roy Williams and crew they go out and lose in Chestnut Hill to the real worst team in the conference.  Fact of the matter is that UNC has only won three times since the calendar shifted from 09 to 10, with two of those wins being against the laughable Wolfpack of NC State.  The worst thing about this UNC basketball season?  That Clemson is not scheduled to play them in the Dean Dome this season.

Did I mention the Wolfpack of NC State?  They managed to pick up their fifth win of the year by knocking of Wake Forest in front of a crowd of 15,324 in the ESA on Saturday.  As per usual, this game was not on the moving picture box up here in PA, so I will refrain from breaking anything down.  Hell, I’m just happy they won a game, and against a top 25 team to boot.  Of course, this win will not register on the vaunted UNC Fan Top 25 W/L Record Ledger unless Wake ends the year in the rankings.  Make sense?

John Wall continues to be a complete stud for Kentucky.  Both Wall and DeMarcus Cousins have panned out to be the real deals, and anyone who watched the end of the Kentucky/Vandy game on Saturday knows it.  Granted, dude for Vandy took a bad shot, but John Wall made sure he paid dearly for it.  Not by blocking the shot, but by going up and retrieving said blocked shot himself.  Of course, at some point missed free throws are going to bite Kentucky right square in the bautuckus.  Yeah, I just made that word up (I think).
The Olympics are also in full gear, and I have to admit I have been enjoying them.  While I try to stay away from anything that chooses it’s winners based on a panel of judges (except Iron Chef and Pitmasters, of course), I did enjoy the half-pipe snowboarding.  And yes, my streak of not watching any figure skating or being tricked into watching it’s inbred sister “ice dancing” is still holding strong.  No American Idol, The Bachelor, Jersey Shore, etc.  None of that crap in my house.

(Side note.  Baseball season is fast approaching.  Those of you who know me well know that I’m a huge baseball guy, and extend a lot of time looking at baseball and blogging about it.  This is where I need your help.  I do not want to inundate you with a bunch of baseball entries that you have zero interest in.  So, if people could please just give a simple yes or no in the comments section in regards to interest in baseball coverage it would be helpful.  If you want it, you will have it.  If you do not, then I will figure out a way to keep you up to speed on things but not going overboard.  Fantasy baseball is huge, not just to me, and I will be rolling out lots of helpful content for those that want or need it.  So do me a favor and let me know if you are interested in baseball coverage, either fantasy or real.)

100% agree with your take on Tiger. I watched his “presser”, I think the reaction has been pretty ridiculous. He didnt have to do or say anything.

Ian Poulter, all decked out in pink head to toe, won the WGC.

Yes, on real baseball coverage. Not a big fantasy baseball person, but thats just me.

Wow, I had soo many great things to write…on Saturday. Too bad this place absolutely dies on the weekend apparently…anyways…

I wish Tiger had just come out and said something like this, “I screwed up, I apologize to my wife and my sponsors only. I’m sorry. To everyone else, **c* off. I will come back to Golf when I am good and ready, and when I do, I will once again own ass. Goodbye.”

I was fully surprised to see State win Saturday, but make no mistake about it, Wake played an AWFUL game. They really had their impression of State down perfectly. State played well enough when it counted, and it was a nice change from their usual “lets try and screw this one up” typical 2nd half.

I did enjoy Dave Odom’s commentary also. Dude really knows what to add regarding the plays being run and doesn’t scream and shout about stupid crap (Vitale) and doesn’t say “Well, what I would’ve done”, only to see them not do it and then bitch that that is what they “should’ve done”. (Knight)

Now to another fun topic. Carolina is just a bad team this year. They have a great coach and “good” talent, but a flat out bad team. It is so hard to believe that State has beaten more ACC teams than them this year, and need only need to best them by 1 game for the remainder of the season to finish ahead of them.

One thing I have enjoyed the most from their total collapse has been that almost every single commentator, analyst, coach, and news media outlet has made note that they have SEVEN freakin McD’s AA on their team. Although, I am a little peeved that they seem to push more of the blame on an over-rated recruiting class instead of Ol Roy’s complete failure this year. Oh well I’ll take that, seeing as how it is totally obvious the McD AA is a complete joke, and Carolina (as of now) is the punchline. People have finally woken up to the idea that if Carolina offered a retarded monkey a scholly, he/she would be invited to the event. I’ll save the rest of this topic for the book I’m writing, Black Helicopters.

Oh and Mike, I am a huge Braves fan and would love for you to post about the MLB.

  • I Like Tacos,

You want to be the weekend editor? The position is open.

  • avatar I-Like-Tacos

Boy, would I! Unfortunately, the only thing I know about the internet is how to point and click, and hit the occasional “Submit Comment” button. Maybe I will read up on it and get back to you.

Nice win by State Saturday. Man, if Dennis Horner had woken up about 15 games ago, some of those close losses could have been wins. Question is, was this a one game fluke, or will they pick up a few more wins? Next obvious question is, who cares? Answer – I do, but only because I’m mentally challenged.

  • Brian beat me to it. Tacos, and everyone else, what you may or may not realize is that Brian and I are both extremely busy cats doing out best to provide you with a forum, and all for free. We have the best intentions of covering everything, but actual lives away from the keyboard tend to get in our way. That is why we continue to look for more contributors, and welcome any of you to give it a shot.

  • Yeah and I didn’t have time to write about how 3 players for Duke(undefeated in February) beat Va Tech last night.

Actually 4, Brian freaking Zoubek really is Psycho Z.

    No on baseball

but I need more coverage on USA Men’s Ice Hockey team…no mention of the upset in a game where it looked like USA was on the penalty kill the entire game?!

If anyone watched it, which no one in my office did, and I’m beginning to think I’m the only one in the US that did, that may have attracted some new fans to the sport. It was fast-paced, high scoring, heavy hits and great saves.

  • I thought gotoeleven would have been all over the USA Men’s Ice Hockey team.

I’d like some baseball coverage, not so much on the fantasy stuff tho.

Isn’t following MLB a fantasy anyway?

  • avatar TheManKev

    Baseball, yes!

Focusing on the 2-time defending National League Champion Phillies would be preferred. :D

  • avatar Eric

Yes on baseball. I love the Braves, but just baseball in general (college, MLB, and, heck, why not some Mudcats coverage too?).
